Cases of equine respiratory viruses have been on the rise in recent years. The two most common culprits are equine herpesvirus- 4 and equine influenza. Horses are easily vaccinated against both of these diseases.

In an effort to slow the spread of these viruses at horse shows, the USEF implemented a rule (effective December 1, 2015) requiring that all horses entering USEF licensed show grounds must be current (within six months) on their equine influenza and equine herpesvirus vaccinations.

If your horse is attending a USEF show, he'll need to be accompanied by documentation of his current vaccination status. The USEF recommends the vaccine be administered by or under the direction of a veterinarian.

If your horse was vaccinated by a vet, you'll need documentation from the vet showing the name of the vaccine and the date administered. If your horse was vaccinated by someone other than a veterinarian, you'll need a receipt from the purchase of the vaccine, signed by the owner of the horse, as well as the name, serial number, and expiration date of the vaccine, and the date administered. 

In the event that your horse cannot be vaccinated for health reasons, you'll need a letter letter from the veterinarian on official letterhead stating that your horse cannot be vaccinated due to medical concerns. You'll also need a log of temperatures taken twice daily for the seven days prior to entering the competition grounds, as well as twice daily while on the grounds.
