Preventive Care

Wellness exams, vaccines, Coggins testing, fecal egg counts, and routine health monitoring - we feel strongly that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!”

In addition to providing wellness care services, we also manage your horse’s vet care schedule for you. No more worrying about when that Coggins is due, or whether your horse received his vaccinations on schedule! We will always remind you and help you manage all aspects of your horse’s care!

For added convenience, check out our Wellness Plans!

Lameness

Dr. Poole and Dr. Durham head up the lameness department here at Foundation Equine! Dr. Durham is a board certified surgeon with 15 years of experience managing the most complicated lameness cases referred to her by other veterinarians. Dr. Poole has a unique eye for symmetry and a “whole-horse” approach that keeps horses performing their best.

Most importantly, we enjoy taking a pro-active approach to lameness- preventing it whenever possible! Whether your backyard retiree has a hoof abscess, or your upper level partner feels a tad “off,” we’re here to help with experienced eyes and hands, modern diagnostic equipment, and cutting-edge therapeutics.

Internal Medicine

As a board-certified specialist in equine internal medicine, Dr. Kivett heads this department. We offer high level diagnostics and treatment for colic and GI problems, neurologic issues, respiratory problems, muscle disorders, and metabolic diseases.

Some of the most common problems we help diagnose and treat are diarrhea, ulcers, weight loss, EPM, asthma (heaves), pneumonia, PPID (Cushing’s) and Equine Metabolic Syndrome (insulin resistance).

Dentistry

Dr. Kivett also loves dentistry, and we pride ourselves on our commitment to delivering the best care possible for your horse. Our dental evaluations start with a physical exam and evaluation of the horse's head, facial symmetry, and incisor alignment. We use a comfortable full-mouth speculum, LED lights, oral mirror and oral endoscopy to complete the exam. Every horse is treated as an individual, and we don’t believe that a “one-size-fits-all” float is the solution to every problem.

Routine dental floats are a part of our dental care offerings, as well as treatment for mis-aligned teeth, periodontal disease, and other problems. We also perform tooth extractions for molars and incisors.

Surgery

Dr. Durham is a board-certified equine surgeon and brings an exceptionally high level of skill and experience to the surgery services we offer.

We currently perform standing and minor surgeries including castration, enucleation (eye removal), wound debridement and sequestrum removal, sinus surgery, patellar ligament surgery, mass removals and more. Starting in June 2021 we will offer surgery for kissing spines, cryptorchid castration (retained testicle), hernia repair, umbilical remnant removal (infected umbilicus in foals), neurectomy, and other procedures.

In 2022 we plan to begin offering arthroscopic and laparoscopic surgery.

Reproduction

Dreaming of a foal? We can help make that dream a reality! We offer mare management, artificial insemination with shipped or frozen semen, and embryo transfer.

After your mare is pregnant, you can choose to continue broodmare and neonatal management with customized vaccine schedules, and fetal ultrasounds.

Dr. Kivett’s internal medicine specialty also includes foals, and we are comfortable managing many conditions on your farm, so your fragile foal is much likely to end up at the University!

Chiropractic / Acupuncture

If you’re looking for complimentary therapies to help your horse look and feel his best, we offer both these treatment options!

Chiropractic assessments and adjustments are often performed on horses with poor performance, back or muscle soreness, or as an addition to traditional therapy like joint injections.

Acupuncture can be used for musculoskeletal pain, uterine clearance, soft tissue pain, respiratory problems, and for horses that don’t sweat (anhidrosis).
