Infectious Disease
Infectious disease encompasses a wide variety of conditions, from bacterial GI infections, to respiratory viruses, to tick-borne disease and more. These conditions are often diagnosed with specific laboratory tests, and have rigorous treatment protocols.
Diagnosis of Infectious Disease
When a horse is suspected of having an infectious disease, knowledge of different diseases, their symptoms and the expected course of the disease can help narrow down the lab tests to be run, which saves time in starting treatment and saves the owner money. We utilize a number of specialty referral labs to quickly and accurately test for diseases like Strangles, Equine Influenza, Anaplasmosis, Coronavirus, Salmonella, Coronavirus, Equine Herpesvirus, Corynebacterium (Pigeon Fever), and many others.
Other Important Steps in the Diagnosis of Infectious Disease
When a horse has a fever, diarrhea, nasal discharge and other possible symptoms of infectious disease, it is extremely important to determine if that disease if contagious to other horses. When the disease IS contagious, biosecurity and quarantine procedures become necessary. In the event of a disease outbreak like Strangles or Equine Influenza, we help horse owners and barn management design an isolation and containment system to prevent further spread.
